CHAPTER 10

We sat down at the kitchen table and I eyed the clock on the wall, it was past midnight now and I really just wanted to go to sleep—unfortunately for me there were more pressing matters to attend to.

Lizzy and Glenda came in through the back door, followed by Deacon and Adam.

“Going home,” Adam muttered. “Night.” I thanked Adam has he slumped out of the front door.

“We playing cards?” Glenda asked, seeing Harley and met sat at the table.

“What gives you that idea?” I asked.

“Sitting down at the kitchen table after midnight, you’re either playing cards or having some sort of serious discussion.”

“I don’t see any cards,” Lizzy observed, “So…”

“It’s Artemis,” I said. “He sneezed and opened up some gateway to the Akashic Planes.” Both Lizzy and Glenda looked at me with concerned expressions, apparently everyone knew about this thing apart from me.

“That explains why you’re here then,” Glenda said to Harley. She pulled out a chair and sat down. “Didn’t your momma go crazy learning about that stuff?”

“That’s a blunt way of putting it, yes,” Harley said.

Deacon came over and put his hands on my shoulders. “Is this a witch problem I can help with, or can I go to bed?”

“I think you’re free to hit the hay sheriff, save a spot for me though.”

“Will do,” Deacon said, kissing me on top of the head. “Night ladies.” With that Deacon left the room.

“So how did you know about the rip?” I asked Harley. “I haven’t told anyone else about it yet.”

“I keep a close eye on the Akashic Planes,” Harley said. “My mother devoted her life to studying them. Most witches couldn’t tell you much about them, I suppose my family specialized in finding out everything we could.”

“The topic isn’t exactly in demand,” Glenda pointed out. “The planes are dangerous, we can’t get anything from them, and you can’t exactly get a job learning about them.” She looked at Harley. “But you’re a Bishop, I suppose you don’t have to worry about money.”

Harley shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “I was privileged that I didn’t have to think about it, that’s correct.”

“So we have a rip to these planes, is that bad?” I asked Harley.

“Yes, and no. Small tears open up all the time, but they close themselves. An unexpected tear like this is problematic. It’s growing a little bigger every hour, and if we don’t act fast—”

“Artemis already mentioned something about the universe folding in on itself,” I said.

“…That would be an ideal outcome in this scenario,” Harley said. “Before that I’d expect much worse. I don’t know how much you know about the planes—”

“Assume nothing, because that’s the truth. What’s out there?”

“Imagine the universe is several sheets of paper on a table. The very bottom sheet is the Akashic Planes, all energy and matter stems from it—even magic. Above that is the Astral realm, above that is our physical reality, and above our reality are layers of existence we can’t really comprehend.”

“Do things live on these planes?” I asked.
